Question:
Moving out of state for first time?
2018-12-13 16:01:01 UTC
•I plan on getting an apartment, NOT a house
•The only things I’m taking are my money, my car, and whatever clothes/items I can fit in my two backpacks

Any tips on what I should go about doing first?

P.S, my job I currently have is transferring me to the one where I’m moving, so I’m not jobless. My s/o lives there so if all fails he would take me in, but I don’t want that to be the FIRST thing I do. (Unless ot really has to be).

Get an apartment before you move.

My daughter did that before she moved. Got it online.

Since your partner is already there they should know what areas to look at and should be able to check them out for you,

Most apartments are not furnished. Plan on getting a bed immediately. Order online so it will be delivered right after you get there,

So? Sounds easy. Of course you need deposits. But being homeless is cheap enough.

Suggest you get some help from your partner. For your situation a stay at suite style hotel have a reasonable rate for a stay of a month or two while you search out your more permanent location.

For your first month or two you just need a place to sleep a cheap motel or whatever. YOUR

stuff can wait in storage to come when you have an address to unload.Or when you have the money to buy it.

For your first bit it really helps to have an address to get some mail. Your friend should be able to help with that,You need this for things like your new insurance new drivers and so on.

Once you get your permanent place you can change your address again to the place you call home.

That new job does not get you money in your pocket the first day. Many one time expenses like utility accounts first months rent need to paid before you get paid, Can easily be in the many thousands,You DO NOT have to furnish the new to you place with everything your first weekend, Take your time getting the wants. Get what you NEED first.

Moving is extremely stressful you DO NOT have to do everything the first day, the first week or even the first year. It will take time to learn the many ways to get to and from the job, the place that sells the stuff you prefer, the gym, the park the everything else.

Suggest you take a bus ride or use your human navigator to just explore the different parts of your new home.May take many trips if a large city. Many places have some new resident service. USE THEM to help get you set up and find your way around the local stuff.

You new state probably has a guide for new to state residents GOOGLE it. now. You can get started on many things BEFORE you move. Use something like street view on Google maps to explore the places near were you might rent.

A website like this may help in your exploration.

Unless you've managed to find a landlord willing to rent to you based on your extant work contract you may have to consider that you wouldn't get to sign a lease until you have a few paystubs to show. So if you don't want to crash with the SO for the first month or so you may have to factor in the cost of an extended stay hotel. Otherwise it sounds like you've done your research and planned well for this move.

Find an apartment. Determine what you really need to take. Get rid of the rest.
